Men vs. Women and the Great Money Value Debate

Participating with Barbara Turley of EnergiseWealth.com in exploring and dissecting this important topic was a highlight of this past year for me.

Women and their relationship with Money is the undercurrent that flows beneath much of what occurs in the business world regarding salary, value, equality and more. In this thought provoking conversation we dig into many of the important facets – from historical to societal to internal perceptions and fears.

“We had a fascinating talk about the depths of the complexities we face when it comes to this thing called money and how, specifically, we have both noticed in our coaching of women the blocks that money can cause.

What I loved about interviewing Deborah was the chance to flesh out a topic that has been flowing around in my head for quite sometime now. How women interact with money and how it differs to how men interact with money (speaking very generally of course) is a topic that we both feel is deep rooted in history going back to the dawn of time.

Some of the key things we dissected were

    • Why women sometimes feel that charging a lot of money for their services might make people see them in a less than positive light.
    • Why women find themselves apologising and underpricing their services in the business & working worlds.
    • How change has to start from within women first before the change we want will be reflected back to us from outside.”

    Hi Deborah,

    So nice to see you on your blog. It has been way to long!!!!!

    I personally find this to be a fascinating conversation. I can completely understand your point; especially in regards to the way men and women think about this issue as a norm.

    I have never hired someone, or a vendor, and paid them based on their gender. I don’t care. I care about their skill set, abilities, willingness to learn.

    I find as a norm that women are much more willing to learn and that value is extremely important to me!!!! Men tend to have a know-it-all attitude and are not as amicable to being a team player.

    Here is the challenging part, women treat women the same men do when it comes to pay. How many articles have I seen where a corporate CEO who is a female pays her female team less than men based on some phony criteria?

    How about politician’s who are screaming equality in pay and yet are hypocrites. I won’t mention names but you may know who I’m referring to?

    I can’t control what others are doing, but I can control what I’m doing! I have a firm philosophy that if I just do what is “right” things will work out for everyone!!!! Sometimes, doing what’s right actually costs me something I don’t want to pay – but it’s worth doing.

      In many ways, this is exactly what Barbara and I were talking about in the conversation….

      The mindset and perception are so cultural and ingrained that what’s really “wrong” is considered “normal”. That is why so much of this shift must come from women themselves – and from digging deeply into their own relationship with money and the meaning they give it. It is difficult to see one’s filter through one’s filter. It’s through conversations like this and exploring believes and values with another, that closely held perceptions that might not be true, are illuminated!
