I Feel Good Today – Authentic Growth Business and Family

August 28, 2015 By Deborah Tutnauer

Authentic Growth in Business and Family

Today I dropped off my 13 year child at orientation for new public school students. It was a huge

Take Chances. Embrace Change.

Take Chances. Embrace Change.

step for me, as my child has never attended public school before. As a die-hard outside the box thinker, I vowed back in 1989 that any child I had would never go to public school and become one of masses being taught from an old and tired paradigm.

Our educational journey as a family has led us through a few wonderful alternative private schools and some stints of homeschooling (parts of which we loved and parts of which were too lonely for my social girl). Last Winter my sure-headed daughter announced that she was ready to go to public school. {Gulp} . Her reasons were well thought out, valid and relevant to her strengths and personality.

I know for a fact that this transition will be much harder for me than for her. I can spout alternative education research and philosophy for hours. This will not be that. And so I will breathe through the homework and tests and seemingly silly “busy work” and intractable subjects and memorization as my 8th grader finds her way and sinks into the structure that she loves and desires.

She is being fully cognizant of her needs and authentic in her wishes to step into this common box. I feel as a parent I have laid an excellent foundation of critical thinking skills the ability to question appropriately and not follow the masses like a sheep. She is a strong girl. She will do great. I will continue to breathe.

Because I’ve chosen an alternative path for so many years, my parenting has had to be much more hands on than that of parents who drop their kids off at 8 and pick them up a 3 every day starting in kindergarten. There is no judgement here. Just an acknowledgement of the impact all our years of “different drumming” has had on my time – both real time and psychic head space time.

So I feel good today. Though I was able to create a multiple six figure income as an entrepreneur in two different types of business, over the past years, I now see a new light in the tunnel. Time in all it’s glory is about to open up for me in a way I have not experienced in 13 years. My white board is filled with ideas. Not only ongoing growth of impact through coaching and consulting, but also teaching, writing and other snippets of potential brilliance. I’ve committed to following James Altucher’s Daily practice – in particular adding the idea machine aspect. I commit to writing 10 new ideas down every day!

Though I already live a lifestyle of balance with physical, mental, emotional and spiritual, it’s time to challenge my brain to step it up – to work harder – to spew ideas into the universe  ( or at least into my notebook) on a daily basis.

If you are not growing, you are dying.

As my daughter begins a new phase in her young life – as a teenager – as a public school student – as an independent spirit choosing a path different than her Mom would choose for her, I too begin a new phase.

Here’s to business growth.

Here’s to family growth.

Here’s to embracing change and always being able to see possibility!

    Love it Deborah!
We too have struggled with public versus private and ended up doing both for our kids. In the end, our kids are independent thinking people, oh my! It’s that transition from 100% dependent to independent that can be a challenge with school and friends highlighting the challenge. My wife and I find it a challenge to let them choose when we don’t agree.

I hear you on that front Phil!
It’s been my steepest parenting learning curve – letting go and trusting that decisions she makes that are different than what I would have chosen, will work out OK. Our job as parents is to launch our children successfully into the world and teach them to think for themselves. Thus we have to go with it when they do!!

      Let’s catch up soon Phil!
      Warmly,
      Deborah

    This is so awesome Deborah.
Its good you finally allowed your kid to attend a public school with other kids. I’m very sure she won’t follow them because she is not them and you’ve really taught her very well.

Its really good to be developing ourselves constantly because as you rightly said… If you’re not growing, you’re dying and i agree with that.

Going to check out that James Altucher’s Daily practice immediately.

    Thanks for sharing.

What People Are Saying

"Deborah Tutnauer came into my life...and now she is the little voice in my head always saying, “Remember the big picture.” As business owners, that’s our REAL job! .... Deborah helped me create a few short and long term goals to grow our customer base, improve their loyalty, and, most recently, log a couple of record sales days online. She also helped me recognize the small business pitfalls I was experiencing and organize my time and focus in order to work more efficiently and more effectively.
I would recommend hiring Deborah to other small business owners, who want to lay out and achieve their business goals through a diverse range of personal and operational improvements." Brooke Furminsky - The Angling Bookstore December 2015

“Deborah is one of the most positive and energetic people I’ve met in my career. She is an excellent coach and mentor with a wealth of experience. She has been instrumental in my taking a giant step forward in my business model. Her uplifting words of wisdom and encouragement have kept me going through a very challenging time. I would recommend her highly.” – Rick Binder, Personal Trainer – Entrepreneur. San Diego, CA , May 2013

See What Others Are Saying

"“I had the pleasure to work with Deborah for 4 months. She showed me the ropes to help me improve my strategies as a business owner, and gave me plenty of ideas to work with. She also helped me better direct my efforts so that I would be able to attract the right clients for my business.>
As a coach she is very easy to talk to and knows how to listen as well. If you lack confidence or knowledge to be able to run a successful business, I would recommend Deborah Tutnauer to help you on the right tracks.” Sylviane Nuccio June 2015
