Take a minute and close your eyes.
Go back in time and be yourself at
7 or 8 years old.
What do you remember most about
your mom?
For me, memories begin with snapshots
of days at beach, or setting the table
for dinner, or family trips to Florida
when we were carried sleepily from our
beds and put to rest at 4 AM on the
soft cushions in the back of the wood
sided station wagon. (Pre-car seat days).
But deeper in those memories are the
senses. The coolness of my moms hands
on my forehead when I had a fever. The
safety of coming home after a hard day
at school and knowing she would listen.
The warm bed to crawl into after a bad
dream.
I’d like to say I remember my moms yummy
meals or delicious cookies. But my mom
was a little different than your typical early
60’s housewife. I didn’t even realize that
you could make soup without a can until I
took home-ec in 7th grade. Same with baking..
I thought you needed a box of Betty Crocker
in order to make a cake.
Moms today have a million more choices than
my mom did back when she was raising us. Even
so, she seemed to know that cooking and sewing
were not necessary to be a good mom, nor a good
wife.

Hello Deborah,
The memories are flooding in. Lots of good things to remember of my mom…..she’s been gone for 2 years now, miss her lots. Grew up in Charlestown,MA…. Wasn’t always easy but we made it……didn’t always have a lot, but home was home and it felt safe when you walked in.
