When skimming through my cornucopia of business success books recently, I was struck by this observation. Business Success authors all consistently write about Personal Growth. Pick from any of the leaders in Entrepreneurship, Marketing and Sales Success, Leadership and Management and you will see the theme. John Wooden, Darren Hardy, John Maxwell, Jack Canfield and more consistently bring their wisdom back to a variety of personal growth habits and maxims while they share their ideas about the path to business success.
Often in business and entrepreneurship, when people decide they require or desire coaching, they do so because they want a FIX for a specific problem . It could be anything from marketing clarity to team building and communication, to time management and focusing issues. In the field of psychology it is well known that crisis is an opportunity. People inherently do not like change until NOT CHANGING become too painful. In business it is similar.
The majority of business owners , entrepreneurs and employees do not seek out personal growth coaching because they woke up one morning deciding they wanted to expand their authenticity or essential clarity. They decide to hire a business coach because something is amiss. There is a situation, or a problem that is blocking their movement. They feel stuck on the path to success and thus are frustrated or confused. It is the discomfort that compels the search for relief and thus the decision to hire a coach or engage in a coaching program for business success.
Of course, coaches and consultants come into this situation all the time and develop business based actions to address the presenting problems. Even so, along the way personal growth within the people involved forms the foundation of the changes. How does one change the way they communicate with their teams or with their customers without changing internally? They don’t. How do business owners more effectively market, if their message is ambiguous or unclear because they have gotten clarity within themselves? They don’t.
External reorganization, improved team communication, powerful marketing messages for entrepreneurs all begin within the individuals involved. They are the ones who must step bravely outside their comfort zones. This is personal growth. Business coaching has many pieces depending on the precipitating factors. All involve individuals doing something differently than they were doing it before. Personal growth coaching for business success comes alive when the coach and the client realize and embrace this fact. It is the nugget the greatest success leaders of our time continually preach and promote.
