There is a Bee in my Bonnet
I love seasons! This week has been almost unseasonably warm for February. Coming on the heels of 3 feet of snow and 15 below, it’s quite delightful. Though deep powder is a skiers dream come true, there is something about skiing on a blue bird blue ski Colorado day, with the sun shining warmly on the fresh snow that somehow makes it easier to ski really well. It’s as if the sun increases my abilities exponentially. Go figure! The title of this article is a tribute to Spring – with a picture in my mind of a beautiful springtime bonnet and a bee buzzing around between the bonnet and the wearers head distracting from the beauty of both the bonnet and the Spring. Elevated entrepreneur business coaching sets the bee free in an age old and yet new again manner, allowing vastly improved financial results and joy.
Today I was talking with a very skilled corporate business coach about business coaching. It just so happens that this particular person is also a client of mine, not because he doesn’t understand all the aspects of coaching a business to increased revenues and margins and not because he isn’t experienced in leadership and team assessment tools and interpretation, and not because he can’t teach presentation, sales and closing methodology. This man is my client because he had a THING that was blocking his full success. In our conversation today we ended up talking about the fact that everyone has a THING.
We all come to our work and our life with our stuff – our Stories – our belief system – our stumbling blocks. It doesn’t make much difference whether you are the CEO of a Fortune 500 Company or a solo-entrepreneur with a fledgling business. No matter where you are or how you work, you get to bring YOU into everything you do – The Good – The Bad – The Ugly.
The Bee in my Bonnet is not that you have a THING or that I have a THING, it’s that the world of business teachers, trainers, presenters, speakers, consultants and coaches often moves forward with their teaching, training, presenting, speaking, consulting and coaching without taking into account all the THINGS that stop people from taking action and succeeding with all the good methods and skills they are learning. The Bee in my Bonnet is about the myriad of systems and methods, techniques and secret tips that people pay thousands of dollars for, that still leave them frustrated and struggling because no one talked to them about or helped them with their THING.
Another wonderful trainer I know works with medium sized corporations, helping managers and salespeople become comfortable with presenting both internally and within a sales conversation. She is one of the best person to person networkers I know, building her business through connections going back to high school. Her training techniques are spot on. Yet she was not experiencing financial success nor joy. As we’ve worked together we discovered that she was doing her work by following a formula she was taught, afraid to shift and modify it in a manner that her years of experience and deep intuition told her would be better for her clients. Once we were able to clarify her values, passions, expertise and the depth of her knowledge on how to help corporations create a huge positive shift in communication, she was able to trust herself in a vastly elevated way and bring her amazing personalized training to the forefront. Her business is growing exponentially and she is working in alignment with her core self.
Could either of these people have made the leap within a cookie cutter group coaching program or through a video based signature system teaching format? I can almost unequivocally say, “No.” The work had to be done through dialogue – through questions and answers – through intimate, facilitated exploration of THEIR STORY and THEIR STUMBLING BLOCKS. Without that type of discovery and even challenge, there would have been surface changes but not the uncovering and recreating that was necessary to bring them and their business to the next level.
Ninety percent of my current clients have gone through other high level business coaching programs prior to working with me. Without fail, all have spoken about the frustration of being taught a “system” that has many good structural facets, but ultimately fell short in terms of helping them bring their unique skills and gifts to the marketplace in a manner that felt completely authentic. When we work, that is where we begin. The results have been stunning.

In my daily interactions I have seen the power of crucial conversations in a coaching/mentoring relationship and I believe that through these conversations self discovery and learning takes place and through self discovery and learning comes sustainable growth and development…

We are certainly on the same page on this topic Coenraad. In the “coaching market” the topic of scale-ability is huge and most coaches who coach coaches, teach to head towards group work and online courses to scale. I get this. In fact after 20 years of working as a private practice psychotherapist, the last thing I wanted to do is return to 50 minute hours and only being able to earn based on the hours per week I was able to sit with clients. So I so get the push to move away from one on one coaching. But then you don’t get the deeper shifts, as we both know.
So then how does one scale their business if they believe this? I’ve pondered this question for a long time and over the past few years I think I’ve found the answer. That will be the next blog post!!
