18 Things Highly Creative People Do Differently – Are Successful Entrepreneurs Creative

March 4, 2014 By Deborah Tutnauer

This list of 18 things highly creative people do differently literally knocked my socks off!

Not only does it describe me so well, but it encompasses so many traits that most of my Solopreneur and Entrepreneur clients have as well. When we initially think about creativity we usually think of the arts. Painters, dancers, musicians, writers and actors are clearly those for whom creativity is the driving force in their lives.

Yet successful entrepreneurs are also artists. They create something from a vision. They connect the dots in new ways. The operate from their deepest inner truth – a place of passion and purpose and authenticity.  Entrepreneurs daydream and get lost in their thoughts for hours at a time. In fact one of the areas I work in frequently entails helping creative business people take their message and ideas down to tangible steps on a daily basis – not to dim the shining light in any way, but to create a structure so their ideas can come into fruition.

There are so many books about success and entrepreneurship that suggest a certain way of structuring the day – such as “get up early in the morning”. If entrepreneurs are indeed highly creative people, then it’s possible that morning is not their time. For myself, I don’t think nor create at my best in the morning and never have – since childhood.  The article mentions that highly creative people work the hours that work for them and I so agree with that. I do my best thinking in the wee hours of the late night.

Another point talked about in the article about creativity in the Huffington Post is that about mindfulness and the necessity of getting out ones head. The flow state of creativity is not a pure mental one. It is soulful journey brought into mental constructs. Allowing time and space for that flow apart from left brained “to-do’s” seems to be a hallmark of not only the best artists, but the most successful entrepreneurs as well. Learning to meditate and doing so regularly is a structured and yet powerful process that teaches one to quiet the mind so one can be.

I hope you enjoy the full article as much as I did.

What People Are Saying

"Deborah Tutnauer came into my life...and now she is the little voice in my head always saying, “Remember the big picture.” As business owners, that’s our REAL job! .... Deborah helped me create a few short and long term goals to grow our customer base, improve their loyalty, and, most recently, log a couple of record sales days online. She also helped me recognize the small business pitfalls I was experiencing and organize my time and focus in order to work more efficiently and more effectively.
I would recommend hiring Deborah to other small business owners, who want to lay out and achieve their business goals through a diverse range of personal and operational improvements." Brooke Furminsky - The Angling Bookstore December 2015

“Deborah is one of the most positive and energetic people I’ve met in my career. She is an excellent coach and mentor with a wealth of experience. She has been instrumental in my taking a giant step forward in my business model. Her uplifting words of wisdom and encouragement have kept me going through a very challenging time. I would recommend her highly.” – Rick Binder, Personal Trainer – Entrepreneur. San Diego, CA , May 2013
