Go back in time and be yourself at
7 or 8 years old.

What do you remember most about
your mom?

For me, memories begin with snapshots
of days at beach, or setting the table
for dinner, or family trips to Florida
when we were carried sleepily from our
beds and put to rest at 4 AM on the
soft cushions in the back of the wood
sided station wagon. (Pre-car seat days).

But deeper in those memories are the
senses. The coolness of my moms hands
on my forehead when I had a fever. The
safety of coming home after a hard day
at school and knowing she would listen.
The warm bed to crawl into after a bad
dream.

I’d like to say I remember my moms yummy
meals or delicious cookies. But my mom
was a little different than your typical early
60’s housewife. I didn’t even realize that
you could make soup without a can until I
took home-ec in 7th grade. Same with baking..
I thought you needed a box of Betty Crocker
in order to make a cake.

Moms today have a million more choices than
my mom did back when she was raising us. Even
so, she seemed to know that cooking and sewing
were not necessary to be a good mom, nor a good
wife.

“Mompreneur”
A new term, coined by mom entrepreneurs
and becoming mainstream enough that is shows
up in Google statistics. Moms who know in their
heart that they can be there for their families
and also be passionate and creative in a business
of their choosing.

Welcome to Good Day Mompreneur.

Why is time management important?

When you have effective time management skills in your business and your life, you create more positive results in a shorter time. Time is money and particularly in home business, people struggle with time management and often feel overwhelmed. The outcome is an inefficient and ineffective business, leading to lower income and less satisfaction than is possible.

Time management is the most common nemesis of home business owners. When you work in an office setting there is a predetermined structure. At home, you make the rules. It’s lovely to work all days in your PJ’s, eating peanut butter from the jar while you sit at your computer. But unless you combine that with proven time management exercises and make the effort to develop effective time management skills, your lovely days at home will be spent spinning your proverbial wheels.

Working at home requires that you focus deeply on tasks that are going to move your business to where you want it to be. You need to eliminate distractions, create action plans, develop excellent boundaries and steer clear of “busy work”, ie: thinking that twitter, fb and returning emails is true creative “work”.

The master of Time Management is my friend and colleague Michael Wilson, of Best-Marketing-Strategies.

“If today’s economy has left you in need of more cash, consider this emerging trend: Millions are using the Internet — and a minimal amount of time — to bring home extra bacon.”

This is the opening paragraph in a great article about making real money from home, that appeared today in the Yahoo Finance.

You can read the original by clicking this link:
http://finance.yahoo.com/career-work/article/110123/4-ways-to-make-cash-online?mod=career-selfemployment

What I particularly liked about this article was the fact that it brings into the mainstream, a number of online marketing activities that people have been doing successfully for years. It give legitimacy to an activity that used to exist on the fringes. I know, as an online marketer, you will appreciate the information.

A metaphorical story:

I was a bona fide Girl Scout for 10 years. I spent every summer from age nine until I was seventeen, at Girl Scout camp. Camp Blue Bay was located on a beautiful stretch of land at the end of Long Island, near East Hampton (now home to the rich and famous). Back in the late sixties, East Hampton was a sleepy little fishing village with a penny candy store, a movie theater, grocery, a few bars and many bait & tackle shops. Blue Bay was situated directly on the beach bordering Gardiner’s Bay. The camp existed until about four years ago, when it was sold (probably to land developers–Boo Hoo).

Once you walked inland off the beach, camp was heavily wooded. All the paths through the woods from one unit (Tajars, Romany, Innisfree, and others) to the next and back to the dining hall, were light colored sand. Obviously as a youngster, flashlights were necessary. But at the years passed, the cool kids were the ones who didn’t need them.

If you walk through the woods at night with no light source, your eyes will become very accustomed to the dark. Even when there is no moon there is ambient light coming from the stars. In fact, even on the darkest of nights it is possible to walk swiftly and securely on paths through the woods without using a flashlight. Seeing the path is mixture of your eyes and your intuition and looking in the direction you are heading — never looking down — always trusting your feet.

What’s funny is that you can actually “see” and sense so much more this way, than you can if you use a light. In fact, if you turn on a flashlight you clearly illuminate a small round area — but the bigger picture goes completely dark and ceases to exist. You can no longer sense or see trees, the sky or people coming towards you until they step into your beam. Another cool fact — you don’t even hear as well, with the flashlight turned on.

With all the news recently regarding natural disasters and terrorism fears, it is easy to forget that the most common emergency or disaster scenario effecting families are house fires. Home evacuation plans are crucial for every family and might be used in many types of emergencies requiring evacuation, but they are especially important for fire planning.

Taking the time to plan and practice can mean the difference between life and death. There are many aspect to consider,
but the 4 most crucial aspects to emergency disaster preparedness in the home are related to escape.

1. Make a detailed map of your home
2. Practice escape drills
3. Have a plan in case you are separated
4. Have and practice using an emergency preparedness kit or pack.

Let’s go over these four crucial aspects to an escape plan in detail.

1. Make a detailed map of your home – The map should include all entries and exits, including accessible windows. Label the primary and secondary escape route from each room. Label each room that someone sleeps in and who sleeps there. Label the shut off valves for gas, water and electricity. Designate a gathering place on the map, that is outside the home.
2. Practice your escape plan - A plan is only as good as the knowledge and comfort level of the people using it. Everyone in the family must know how to escape, whether through a door or through a window. In a two story home, you’ll want to invest in a fire escape ladder that allows you to descend from an upstairs window. Experts recommend one in each room, especially if a hallway fire could block access from one room to the next. Practice shutting off valves for gas, electricity, etc..Don’t really do it, just make sure everyone knows where they are. Have a pair of shoes, gloves and a flashlight or light stick near every bed. Make sure everyone knows where the Emergency Disaster Preparedness kit is, and make a plan for someone grabbing it when you exit the house.
3. Have a plan in case you are separated - In additions to having a gathering place designated outside the home you need some other plans in place as well. Have an out-of-state and out-of-town person designated as a contact, for each family to call in case you are separated. Try and have the phone numbers memorized, inside your cell phone and posted by phones in the house.
4. Have and practice using you Emergency Disaster Preparedness Kit. – It has become common place for people to think in terms of a 72 hour kit, but more and more, as you speak with experts in the field, they are recommending a five day kit. This has to do with everything from how long it may take help to arrive in a larger scale disaster, to the better safe than sorry mentality of having a bit more water and food than you need, rather than a bit less. Once either purchase or put together your kit, take the time to familiarize yourself with the items insides and how to use them. In an emergency situation, it will be comforting to know what is there, and imperative to not add stress by being confused by the contents.

Emergency and Disaster Preparedness is not an option. An ounce of forethought now, is worth a pound of reaction later.

What if you hear a knock on the door and were told, “You Have Five Minutes to Evacuate”. Would you know what to do next? Do you have a bag ready to go with all the essentials?

People do business with people they know, trust and like.

How does this translate to your blog, the center piece of your online marketing efforts?

When you develop relationships with people offline, you do so with a give and take sharing of information. The connection builds through the sharing of value, ideas, experiences. Your blog allows you do the same thing online. Relationships are developed with your readers and if you offer them delightful tidbits that feed their needs and their soul, they will come back again and again to hear what you have to say.

Learning how to be a good blogger is crucial to a successful online presence. You can be excellent at PPC (pay per click) and other forms of advertising, but you lack an online home if you don’t have a blog. People want to know about you. They want to feel good about the person they are doing business with.

Often I’ve clicked on a PPC ad, and landed on someone’s opt-in page. What do I do then? I search around to try and find out who owns and page. I google them and see who they are and what is the essence of their message. If I like what I see, I go back to the initial landing page and opt-in. If I don’t find a blog where I can get a feel for the person, chances are I won’t opt-in to their list.

You may have heard me talk about my friend Ann Sieg. Of all the strong leaders in the online network marketing world, Ann stands out for many reasons. She is a mature woman who has raised her children with many of the same values that I bring to my family. She is sincere and steadfast in her convictions. And she is an intelligent and powerful business woman. I always enjoy our conversations, whether in person or on the phone.

I like this video that Ann just sent me about the power of blogging. I think you’ll like it too.

This is the story of our Mothers and Grandmothers who lived only 90 years ago.

Remember, it was not until 1920 that women were granted the right to go to the polls and vote.

The women were innocent and defenseless, but they were jailed nonetheless for picketing the White House, carrying signs asking for the vote.

And by the end of the night, they were barely alive. Forty prison guards wielding clubs and their warden’s blessing went on a rampage against the 33 women wrongly convicted of

‘obstructing sidewalk traffic’.
They beat Lucy Burns, chained her hands to the cell bars above her head and left her hanging for the night, bleeding and gasping for air.

(Dora Lewis)
They hurled Dora Lewis into a dark cell, smashed her head against an iron bed and knocked her out cold. Her cellmate, Alice Cosu, thought Lewis was dead and suffered a heart attack. Additional
affidavits describe the guards grabbing, dragging,
beating, choking, slamming, pinching, twisting and kicking the women.

Thus unfolded the ‘Night of Terror’ on Nov. 15, 1917, when the warden at the Occoquan Workhouse in Virginia ordered his guards to teach a lesson to the suffragists imprisoned there because they dared to picket Woodrow Wilson’s White House for the right to vote. For weeks, the
women’s only water came from an open pail.

Their food–all of it colorless slop–was infested with terrible vermin.

(Alice Paul)
When one of the leaders, Alice Paul, embarked on a hunger strike, they tied her to a chair, forced a tube down her throat and poured liquid into her until she vomited. She was tortured like this for weeks until word was smuggled out to the press.
http://memory.loc.gov/ammem/collections/suffrage/nwp/prisoners.pdf

So, refresh my memory. Some women won’t vote this year because — -why, exactly? We have carpool duties? We have to get to work? Our
vote doesn’t matter? It’s raining?

(Mrs. Pauline Adams in the prison garb she wore while serving a sixty-day sentence.)

Last week, a friend of mine went to a sparsely attended screening of HBO’s new movie ‘Iron Jawed Angels.’ It is a graphic depiction of the battle these women waged so that I could pull the curtain at the polling booth and have my say. I am ashamed to say I needed the reminder.

(Miss Edith Ainge, of Jamestown, New York)

‘One thought
kept coming back to my friend as she watched that movie,’ she said. ‘What would those women think of the way I use, or don’t use, my right to vote? All of us take it for granted now, not just younger women,
but those of us who did seek to learn.’ The right to vote, she said, had become valuable to her ‘all over again.’

HBO released the movie on video and DVD . I wish all history, social studies and government teachers would include the movie in their curriculum. I want it shown on Bunco night, too, and anywhere else
women gather. I realize this isn’t our usual idea of
socializing, but we are not voting in the numbers that we should be, and I think a little shock therapy is in order.

(Conferring over ratification [of the 19th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution] at [National Woman's Party]
headquarters, Jackson Pl[ace] [Washington, D.C.]. L-R Mrs. Lawrence Lewis, Mrs. Abby Scott Baker, Anita Pollitzer, Alice Paul, Florence Boeckel, Mabel Vernon (standing, right))

It is jarring to watch Woodrow Wilson and his cronies try to persuade a psychiatrist to declare Alice Paul insane so that she could be permanently
institutionalized. And it is inspiring to watch the doctor refuse. Alice Paul was strong, he said, and brave. That didn’t make her crazy. The doctor admonished the men: ‘Courage in women is often mistaken for insanity.’

Please, if you are so inclined, pass this on to all
the women you know. We need to get out and vote and use this right that was fought so hard for by these very courageous women. Whether you vote democratic, republican or independent party – remember to vote.

As the plethora of product launches and opt-in offers increases exponentially, the scent of change is in the air. Many are saying “enough is enough” and with that, culling their inbox access to just a select few.

The idea that anyone can build a big list, is an idea that has many more challenges today than it did just three or four years ago. Scary thought for everyone who has hung their hat on the big list/Me, Inc method of building their network marketing organization. In just the past four days I’ve received numerous emails from colleagues talking about all the “lists” that they are opting out of, and all the monthly fees that they are realizing go to programs that they don’t even have time to access.

The network marketing pendulum is swinging again; this time it’s going to back to a core truth that may have gotten lost temporarily in the big list – Me, Inc., – info product launching frenzy of the past few years. What’s the truth?

Network marketing is a people business. For the long term, it is a belly to belly conversation even if done over the phone. Never before have you needed a firm internet presence like you do today. At the same time, if that’s all you have it will no longer serve you. Autoresponders were an amazing tool when people still didn’t realize that the letters were not personally written. How many of your daily emails do YOU actually read now? You still need to work the system…put out the content..run the PPC campaigns…offer the freebie…send the daily and weekly value-laden messages to you list. But you also have to get focused in a new way. A new way that is actually closer to the old way.

You have to truly connect with people in real time.
